Kowelenzer Schängelche

History of the Schängel

Einmal äh Kowelenzer Schängelche

What the bear is to Berlin and the wheel is to Mainz, the Schängelche is to Koblenz.

Today “Kowelenzer Schängelsche” is the name for anyone born in Koblenz, and it originates in the French occupation of the city. Originally it was the name for all the Pänz (kids) born of liaisons between Koblenz girls and French soldiers.

Today every Kowelenzer is proud to be a Schängelchen.

The statue at the town hall was designed by Carl Burger in 1940. It is dedicated to the Koblenz local poet Josef Cornelius, who lived from 1849 to 1943.
